Sus Chef is a 2D cooking stimulation game where you are playing as Katsuya, a Michelin chef who has fallen ill, trying to use a robot, HAT 2.0 to navigate his twin brother, Dodo around and win a cooking competition in order to uphold his reputation. Want to play our game? Download it here.
As a team, we collectively wanted to create a simple yet fun video game centered around cooking.
We also decided in unison that we did not want to go with an emotional or serious route, rather we just wanted to make a silly comedic game that we all like.
With that, we came up with a witty narrative and started to prototype the early stages of our game, working on the mechanics as we go.
This project was the second time I dipped into pixel art on Aseprite and I truly learnt alot from creating this game.
I developed and did multiple iterations for the character designs, animations, backgrounds and cutscenes over the course of 2 trimesters (6 months), ensuring that game feel cohesive, and keeping the branding consistent throughout.
We wanted to make our players feel like they are playing a game in our game as our narrative portrays our main character using a makeshift game console to control his twin competing in a cooking competition on behalf of him.
To bring this unique selling point to life, we included glitches, glass cracks and console malfunction as part of our difficulty progression and level design in Sus Chef, all while ensuring we not not stray away from our comedic narrative.
I served as the art lead and designer in a team of 7.
In my role as art lead, I developed the branding, style guide, and overall artistic concept of the game, as well as created all of the game assets that appear in it. I also assist the design lead by contributing my thoughts and ideas, and reinforcing our intended representation of the game's feel.
Outside of art and design, I prototyped the early stages of the game in Unity as well as create Sus Chef's gameplay showcase video.
